A day hike into the woods provides an immersive nature experience for campers, whether they’re 4 or 14 years old. A hike might climb up a mountain and lead to an expansive, picturesque lunch spot, meander past swamps or old iron mines, lead campers past blueberry bushes, glacial boulders, and all sorts of wild, woody flora and fauna, and more. Each day hike is planned to meet the abilities of different age groups – young children will hike along the rambling, wide path through Kakiat park, while older campers might ascend the steep, rewarding slope of West Mountain in Harriman State Park.
A day in the woods is different from a day at camp, a little wilder, full of challenge, camaraderie, and a particular feeling that comes from exerting effort with others and enjoying the quiet woods and the conversation of friends.
See “What to Bring” on the left. We will email parents in advance of the hike if there are any changes to this list.
