Favorite Memories and Advice From a Head Counselor
Ariel has been with The Nature Place for 12 years, both as a camper and counselor.
How many summers have you spent at The Nature Place?
I have spent twelve summers at camp! I began my journey with NPDC as a camper, when I was eight years old.
What was the best part about being a counselor this past summer?
Definitely my campers! I had such an amazing group.
What is your favorite Nature Place activity?
I think my favorite will always be day hikes and overnights! But I also love drama, swim, and mucking.
What was your favorite part of this past summer?
Seeing my campers grow! It’s so special to be with the same group over the course of six weeks and see all the ways in which they develop and challenge themselves— whether that is swimming, climbing, or making friends. It’s a beautiful thing to witness.
What originally brought you to The Nature Place?
When I was younger, a lot of summer camps didn’t quite fit. I was really artistic and sensitive, and the non-competitive environment of The Nature Place ended up being a really great option for me. At camp I could challenge myself without judgement and foster my creativity.
What has been bringing you back year after year?
The people! Being surrounded by such a supportive community is invaluable. Working at NPDC has been such a gift because I am able to work with my friends and collaborate with so many caring, passionate people.
Who is your favorite morning share character?
I must say her majesty, the illustrious Queen of the Flying Bananas!
What was your first memory of The Nature Place?
My earliest impression of camp was being surrounded by music. I remember being dropped off and seeing counselors smiling to greet me, and someone was usually playing a guitar. All of the songs at Morning share, too! There is always music around camp at every moment of the day, and it’s awesome.
What advice would you share with a new camper starting at The Nature Place this summer?
Always reach out for help if you need it. We are here to support you, because you belong here!
Who are you looking forward to seeing next summer?
All of my friends on staff and my campers; and I am certainly looking forward to being re-acquainted with all the characters at Share!
What is your favorite camp song?
Peace Like a River.
What is your favorite spot at The Nature Place?
I love the garden! A memorable moment this past summer was walking through the garden when it was in full bloom. It was absolutely gorgeous. My campers loved tasting the fresh mint and basil, and looking at all the bees and flowers.
Where do you think the trolls go during the winter?
I heard they sleep under tree roots and stay nice and warm with blankets of moss and insulated mushroom hats.
What is your favorite camp tradition?
As a camper I loved Morning share because of all the entertaining skits and songs. As a counselor, Friday share has become my favorite because I get to see the campers express themselves creatively and have fun. Another impactful tradition is the ceremony on the last day of camp led by our wonderful Scott Dunn, which is personally very special to me.
What was the most unusual thing you saw in or that has come out of the Fairy Stream?
It is always very exciting when a camper finds an arrowhead. They are rare these days, but when it happens it is always a treat.
How do you get in touch with the Flower Fairy to tell them about a birthday?
I ring a tiny little bell and she usually comes! If I misplace the bell (which happens sometimes) I just whisper to the mushrooms and they pass the message along to her for me, snail-mail style.
What is your favorite way to stay connected to The Nature Place during the winter?
Hearing the crackle of bare tree branches in the wind, or watching the snow fall. Nature is always speaking to us, we just have to remind ourselves to listen to it! Staying attuned to the natural world year-round always makes me feel like camp is always with me.
How do you set yourself up for a great day at camp in the morning?
Packing a healthy lunch, sunscreen, and of course a big cup of freshly brewed coffee!
If you had to sum up your experience at The Nature Place, what would it be?
I would say that NPDC is an environment that supports my growth— interpersonally, creatively, and cognitively. I spent so many of my formative years growing up at camp, and it has helped me become the person I am today. Most importantly, it sparked my curiosity in the world around me. Because of Nature Place, I always have my eyes and ears open to what the world has to offer. Seeing my campers experience that shift in awareness as well has been such an incredible full-circle moment.
